Weeds

Thousands of weeds have been brought into Australia from foreign countries.  Many by our well-meaning forebears who thought it was a useful thing to do but now it is clear what tremendous damage it has wrought.

Unbelievably to those who have contact with the native and rural landscape, environmental weeds are still being planted in domestic gardens and being sold by commercial nurseries.  Most of these are "easy to grow" which is why when they escape into bush-land they become formidable pests.  Foreign invaders are not necessarily from overseas, for example, sweet pittosporum is a native of East Gippsland but in our local environment its prolific seeding and spreading of the fruit by birds makes it one of the worst weeds that we have to deal with.

A Weed Identification Guide has been produced through the combined efforts of the City of Casey, Cardinia Shire Council and the City of Greater Dandenong.

This booklet assists with the identification of 90 of the worst environmental and agricultural weeds over the three Councils by providing coloured pictures of each species as well as information and control methods.  Click here for download or request a copy from one of the Councils.
